As we hugged: “so glad you could make it.”
“I’m just about leave, actually.”
“Oh?” she swallowed the sigh, but her relief was still visible in the way her shoulders shrunk. She had just relieved tension.
I love the way we turn away from the table, just a bit; the way we offer half of our backs to the rest of the party, just a bit; I’m smitten by the way we privatize our conversation, just slightly. But I’ve got to go, you know? and anyway, I’m not keen on playing fifth wheel. Not tonight. In the future, call me up if you’re in town and maybe I’ll be awkward then, staying around to make a random guy jealous. It’s a something I’m use to, a role I play well.
