As America advances from the round of 16 to the quarter finals of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Tournament, Chad Grayson, 24, readily admits that his sudden interest in the tournament is probably due to the fact he watched ‘Bend It Like Beckham,’ back in 2012.
“I didn’t even see it when it came out,” admits Grayson. “I was taking some film class for a Humanities credit or something, and I had to watch the thing and write a report on gender roles in sports or whatever. I remember thinking it was really okay.”
Grayson says he didn’t actually know there was a Women’s World Cup taking place until his girlfriend turned it on while he was loading a bowl of marijuana into his favorite water pipe.
“I was like, ‘whoa, I saw a movie kind of like this in college,’ and then my girlfriend asked if it was Bend It Like Beckham, and I was like, ‘yeah,’ and then it all came flooding back sort of. I was all like, ‘yeah, I’ve seen this before.'” recalls Grayson.
The area man says he missed “pretty much the whole first half,” but then explained he really tuned in when people started scoring goals.
He went on to describe how soon he developed a crush on the US team’s superstar forward Alex Morgan, adding that she reminded him of Keira Knightley, and that both girls “sure were cute.”
“Yeah, I was surprised there were so many hot chicks playing soccer. I have to watch this sport more often,” Grayson said.
When asked whether he would tune in for America’s next match on Friday against China, he shrugged his shoulders.
“Oh, yeah. Sure, I guess. If I remember.”
